Treating Graves’ Disease

Dr. Michael Ruscio: Hey, everyone. This is Dr. Ruscio.

I am here with Debbie, who has done awesome. She has Grave’s and we really haven’t had a chance to talk about it much.

You came in with typical Grave’s presentation – racing heart, anxiety, feeling hot, some of the typical hyperthyroid symptoms. Why don’t you tell everyone where you were in terms of the pressures you had in trying to figure what to do.

Debbie: Well, it was really difficult because I did have all these symptoms, got tested, and I did have Grave’s – I tested positive for Grave’s. I did go see a highly respected endocrinologist. His advice was to eliminate my thyroid. And I knew in my heart that I wanted to do whatever I could not to do that.

Dr. Ruscio: And rightfully so.

Debbie: I wanted to go a natural route if I could. It was kind of depressing because I felt like I didn’t have any other option.

But, then a friend of mine who is very natural – she’s into homeopathy – she had told me that you (Dr. Ruscio) would be doing a talk on thyroid. I didn’t think that was going to pertain to me – I had high thyroid, and you were a specialist in low thyroid – so I wasn’t going to go. I ended up going; it was great because you actually helped me.

Dr. Ruscio: I asked her to mention that because the talk was on hypothyroidism, but the underlying mechanism that causes hypothyroid is autoimmune, and that’s also the main mechanism for Grave’s. So, the mechanics are very much the same in terms of the underlying cause. We did some therapies to treat the underlying cause, and we also used some natural therapies to dampen the hyperthyroid, which I don’t think a lot of people appreciate. But there have been clinical trials using natural agents as anti-thyroid treatments that help quell that hyperthyroid spell that you had. And it worked really well for you.

Debbie: It worked great.

Dr. Ruscio: And so, your symptoms (went) down quickly…

Debbie: Oh, yeah.

Dr. Ruscio: Her antibody levels went down. Her thyroid numbers normalized – they are not normal, and I think that is something that may be important for us to share. When treating a Hashimoto’s patient, for example, oftentimes their antibody levels are very, very high initially. After therapies, they don’t quite get into the normal range, but they hover just above it.

The same thing happened in Debbie’s case. She’s not textbook perfect, but she is a heck of a lot better than she was before.

Debbie: Oh my gosh…

Dr. Ruscio: I consider it a clinical win when her antibodies were worse, but now they are much better. Her symptoms are much better. We are in the monitoring phase right now. You’ve been symptom and flare-free for about a year-and-a-half or even longer.

Debbie: About a little over a year. It’s been great.

Dr. Ruscio: She’s done awesome. I just wanted to get her take because Grave’s is something that I am hoping someone who is watching this (will) will see this and act rather than getting radioactive iodine or getting your thyroid gland removed. Because, of course, once you do that, there’s no going back.

Debbie: There’s no going back. And so, you know, you’re not alone. Things happen, but really search out and find out what your alternatives are, because it really can change your life. It changed mine.

Dr. Ruscio: You’ve done awesome. Thanks for taking a moment to speak with us. And, hopefully, to you viewing, this will be helpful.
