Intestinal Worms Causing Weight Gain, Stress, Food Allergies, Constipation, and Insomnia – A Patient Conversation

Taenia solium, also known as pork tapeworm, is not a common infection but it can be a hidden cause of illness. Let’s check in with Debbie who had this infection at the root cause of her weight gain, stress, food allergies, constipation, and insomnia.  We’ll also discuss some very important warning signs that need to be addressed before treating this pesky infection.

Dr. Michael Ruscio, DC: Hey, everyone, this is Dr. Ruscio. I’m here with Debbie, who has done really well, and she had some interesting stuff that you don’t really see every day, so I thought we could share some of that.

Debbie, could you maybe give people a little bit of understanding in terms of what you initially came in with, maybe a little bit about what you had done before and how you were kind of struggling, and then what you were struggling with? Then we can kind of go from there.

Debbie: Well, I’ve struggled with a lot of different problems. My main problem most of my life has been weight gain, and that was kind of the goal of my life, was to lose weight, but the more I chased after that, the more I had problems such as fibromyalgia, digestive issues, constipation, and that just progressed to having brain fog, nervousness, just an inability to cope, and that’s kind the of the end of when I found you!

DrMR: There was the weight, there was the inability to cope, and there were also some digestive symptoms.

Debbie: Yes. Basically there were certain things I just could not eat, and if I tried to eat fats, if I tried to eat certain kinds of vegetables, I would either gain weight or I would have constipation and stomach upset and gas… like a big dog!

DrMR: And some bloating and constipation.

Debbie: Yes, bloating and constipation, and I thought it was normal. That was my problem. I didn’t realize that that’s an abnormal thing that can be fixed!

DrMR: Sure. And insomnia.

Debbie: Yes. I wasn’t sleeping, which I chalked up to menopause. I didn’t realize that actually was a thing that could be fixed too. And sleeping all night is awesome!

sleep

DrMR: I have suffered from insomnia myself, and it is not fun.

So a lot of these were things going on, and you had been kind of dabbling with some alternative medicine or functional medicine work and not really able to get the traction and the results that you were looking for.

Debbie: Yes. I was trying to work on my digestion, trying to get my gallbladder to work, and also using some HCl, and I’d hit a wall. There was nothing that I could do. It just wasn’t working for me, and my trainer referred me to you.

Pork Tapeworm

DrMR: Gotcha. So when we looked under the hood, so to speak, we found a very, very mild case of SIBO, which I’m not even sure if it was the main factor or not, but what was a little bit more interesting is that we did see a pork tapeworm.

And this kind of freaked you out a little bit—and rightfully so. I should mention that the pork tapeworm can be a serious worm because it can get into the brain, and it can cause neurological symptoms. And then when you go to treat it, the cyst can actually swell and exacerbate any neurological problems. Especially, it can be dangerous if someone is having seizures. You didn’t have any of that history.

Debbie: No.

DrMR: There were no really frank neurological symptoms to be concerned about. We did have you check in with a doctor locally to make sure that we had another set of eyes and ears on this. Everything seemed to be OK, suggesting that the worm wasn’t in a neurological area that would preclude us from wanting to start treatment, and so we worked our way through some treatment. We’re still kind of working through some treatment. We’re not fully out of the woods yet, but you’ve responded really well to using some antiparasitics.

You’ve reacted a little bit to some others in terms of maybe a die-off reaction, but all that stuff aside, in the process of getting rid of this worm, which we’re preparing to retest for that now to verify, your insomnia is gone.

brainfog

Debbie: Yes.

Results of Treatment

DrMR: I’m just reading from what you just told me here. Anxiety is better, rosacea is better, energy is better, mental clarity is better, you’re starting to lose some weight, and constipation is clear. There’s still a little bit of lingering gas and bloating, which we’re taking some steps to remedy, but overall, you had said you’re about 80 percent better. Is there anything there that you would like to share with people?

Debbie: Well, again, it’s interesting. When you don’t feel well, you really don’t focus on some of these things, or you think that you’re perpetually caught in them. So when I started being calm in groups and I stopped sweating when I would get in stressful situations, when I wasn’t stressed by the things that had been upsetting me, when I would go to bed at 9 o’clock and wake up at 6, it was just amazing, because I honestly thought this is going to be the way I am the rest of my life.

And exercising. I just had no energy at all to exercise. If I did exercise, I would have to have a nap afterwards.

Poor sleep can be caused by hormone imbalances, and it can be caused by the gut, so we addressed these things together, and this really seemed to kind of tip everything in your favor Click To Tweet

Debbie: And I volunteer once a week at a little surgical center, and I take people back for surgery. I do that from 6 until 10, and I would come home and take a three-hour nap after that, and today I was still going! It’s just a real blessing, and again, the whole focus of my world all my life has been weight loss, and now to have this stuff fixed, yay!

DrMR: Maybe I should elaborate a little bit because I know people are going to be asking what we did specifically. We did use a course of antiparasitic, deworming agents. We did use some herbs that help support female hormones. We then used some adrenal support, which I think all helped with some of the sleep. Poor sleep can be caused by hormone imbalances, and it can be caused by the gut, so we addressed these things together, and this really seemed to kind of tip everything in your favor, where now you’re improving, and I anticipate with every passing month you’re going to continue to get better and better until you get that 80 percent improvement that you’re at right now maybe a little bit closer to 90. That 100, I think, is sometimes hard because I don’t know if we can ever feel 100 percent, because as soon as you feel 100 percent better, then you forget that you feel 100 percent better, so it can be a little bit of a mind trick there.

Debbie: Well, and I’m an old lady! But yeah, previous to finding you, in a week I could do maybe two things, and that was it. And the rest of the time I had to recover from them, both emotionally and physically. Being able to go out to lunch with my friends and go shopping and do more than two things in a week is amazing. I don’t know if anybody else has that problem, but fatigue just closes you in.

Your life gets very small, your world. It’s just been wonderful, and again, it was kind of gradual. All of a sudden, I was like, hey, I have energy to go shopping at Target! Woo! It’s great.

DrMR: You said something a moment ago. This is maybe a quick, interesting thing to reiterate. Your husband is a CPA. And he was very happy with the cost-effective nature in which we did this.

Debbie: Oh, my gosh. Yes. Again, if you’re self-pay, you can make it. You just have to be diligent, and you have to shop around, but it can be very, very expensive, and he is very happy to invest in you! Because you’ve given me back to him!

DrMR: That’s why the tagline on our website is “Get Healthy—And Get Back to Your Life.” That’s what we do. And to be able to do that without breaking the bank, which I think is another important thing just to reiterate.

Debbie, you’ve been awesome. You’re doing great. You’ve been a pleasure to work with.

Debbie: You are a huge blessing to me, and I’m just so thankful. I’m going to get teary. I’m so thankful that you are around and that you help people. Thank you so much.

DrMR: Well, thank you. And thank you, everyone, for watching. If anything changes with Debbie, we’ll keep you guys posted, but I’m pretty sure you’re going to be out there, loose in the world, having fun.

Debbie: Yes! And healthy!

DrMR: All right, thanks, Debbie.

What do you think? I would like to hear your thoughts or experience with this.

  1. Hi Dr. Ruscio, Thank you for this timely article/conversation! I would love to know what the antiparasitic, deworming agents are that you used. I recently had a CDSA test done and have very high Eosiniphil Protein X, which is associated with helminthic infections. This is something I’ve suspected for a long time. I have trouble keeping weight on, versus taking it off.

    1. Hi Doreen. Glad this was helpful! We used Artemisisin with a few other supports. I would advise a good GI workup. Sounds like your headed in the right direction!

  3. Just checking again. What are the anti-parasitic, deworming agents that you used? Thank you very much.

  4. Hi Dr. Ruscio. I found you from your podcast. I’m very grateful for your show’s integrity, and the truly well intended information.
You’ve mentioned certain labs and inaccuracies; is there a particular gi panel you recommend choosing?

    1. Thanks Eileen! I like BioHealth, Diagnostechs, Doctors Data, LabCorp and Quest. We are currently evaluating a test called GI-MAP by Diagnostech solutions. I will be teaching a 1 day GI intensive later this year in the SF area if you would like the deep dive on this. We will put out a notice via newsletter once details are finalized. Hope this helps!

    1. Hi John,
Because this worm can get into muscle or brain tissue and thus may not produce evidence in the stool, antibodies are usually whats tested. Usually via blood but some labs also test via saliva. Hope this helps.

      1. Is this worm something one passes in its entirety, or is it a small worm you cannot see in your feces? I have had a parasite for 20 years, and I have never been given antiparasitics for it, even though I have asked for them. My feces test showed no evidence of worms, but if this pork worm doesn’t sho up in feces, how can I convince my doctor to test for them? There’s only so much fasting and leaf eating one can do, and I could really use a powerful drug to rid myself of whatever beast I have, once and for all.
        Thank you

        1. Hi Sarah,

A google image search shows that it’s a fairly substantial looking worm, so I’d guess you would see it, though I can’t be sure.

  6. Been sick for over 3 years, no clue what’s wrong, all the GI issues. Perpetually sick, wife doesn’t even speak to me anymore. I feel like I am just waiting to die, well used to feel this way, now I cant wait to die, been selling everything I own, and putting it in bank to leave for my kids.

  8. Hi Doctor Ruscio I’ve beenbatyling with my immune system for almost 10 years now I work half a year and half a year in bed. I blame the moulds in our bed room and bathroom ceiling for being sick to the point that my gp can’t help me anymore because he said there is nothing wrong with me. Just this year my niece from Philippines are going to have holiday here in Sydney and 1 week before they arrive I am sick again for 1 week I was diagnosed with vertigo and migraine by the way nausea, wringing in my ear, blurry vision, sensitivity with light, light headed and soon on. So 1 week they arrived I am sick then 1 week upon arriving I get sick again for 1 week she told me to drink vitamins the USANA vitamins I felt really better not getting sick no vetigo and migraine attack for the last 2 months my energy is over the top. But because the vitamins I’m drinking they discontinue the first vitamins I’m drinking my body slow down and I felt really tired and sleepy all the time I gain so much weight. And slowly I became irritable, migraine came back, muscle and joint aches, brain fog, diagnosed with rosacea, now I have rashes in my arm it’s like a chicken skin, I have diarrhoea that doesn’t go away, extremely tired all the time, passing really smelly gas, bloated, feeling really sad all the time anxiety and depression I think its getting me this day. Got panic attack at night I couldn’t breath properly we have a small stairs at home and every time I’m going down or up it’s like I’m dying the 10 minutes walk for me is like a suicide to me. I’m sure wether if it because I gain a lot weight but how about my brain fog and other symptoms? Just last two weeks ago I have blood test because the doctor thinks maybe it’s because of my thyroid by the way it’s a new doctor but my blood tests came out normal everything is normal. My doctor said maybe you are stress because I’m working 10 to 11 hours a day plus 3 n half hours of travelling. Fair enough but what about my loose stools and even I slept for 24 hours I am still tired? I search and search and i came to your website. What do you think? It could be the parasites in my stomach causing me this symptoms? I also have irregular period cramps And I think I’m allergic to soy and dairy products as well this days… please help me.

    1. Hi Catherine,
Sorry to hear of your situation. Working more reasonable hours and reducing your commute might lead to significant healing. These are substantial stressors, don’t take them lightly. My book will be out soon and will walk you through a self-help plan to improve your gut health, which could also be a significant contributor here also. http://www.drruscio.com/gutbook. You can also contact my office if you need help for a distance consult, http://www.drruscio.com/resources. Hope this helps, hang in there!

  12. I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have all the symptoms mentioned above and some other. I thought I had problems with my gut, hypothyroidism, etc, but there was always something that wouldn’t match. I thought I had developed food sensitivity after moving to the U.S. (In my country we eat organic most of the time, I didn’t even know what GMO or additives like carrageenan were.) So, I was making wrong assumptions. Maybe I still am… but this sounds closer. I am a teacher, stress is part of my job, but I have never felt this tired, been this fat (gained 50-60 pounds in 2 years) and have so many awful symptons (extremely red cheeks, swollen feet, itchy skin, anxiety, insomnia, bloated sensation, heart burn, constipation, and others…). What doctor should I visit for getting tested and treated if us a parasite infection? Should I stop vitamins and probiotics intake? They are not making much difference. I am desperate. Please help!

    1. Hi Yamisbel,

I’m sorry to hear about your situation. Hopefully you’ve been able to find a qualified practitioner to work with. If not, you can apply to become a patient of Dr. Ruscio’s here: https://drruscio.com/gethelp/

In the mean time, I’d recommend getting a copy of Dr. Ruscio’s book “Healthy Gut, Healthy You” as it is a comprehensive DIY guide that outlines the exact process he uses in the clinic. https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/

      Good luck!

  14. Good afternoon Doc… I just ran across this patient conversation and have a question? I have been trying to lose weight for over a year. I started at 174 and have been stuck at 165 for a while, I am only 5ft 4in, not a good spot. I understand the weight loss process and goal is to build muscle to push out the fat. I have changed my eating habits along with 3 days of weight training a week, and include running/walking intervals at least 3-4 times a week. Still stuck. Still dealing with what I thought was IBS symptoms- constipation/ diarrhea, dealing with insomnia, and dealing with pure exhaustion that I wrote off as “tired Mommy Syndrome.” Sorry, trying to paint a clear picture. 6 days ago I started a 14 day cleanse and yesterday I passed a tapeworm at least 12 inches long. Gross, sorry. I not so calmly made my way to urgent care. After entertaining them with my story, they prescribed Albendazole, 2 tablets now and 2 more in 2 weeks. After reading the forum of questions and concerns from other patients, is it possible I have been stuck due to parasite infestation? I thought tapeworms caused you to lose weight, not retain it. Any input would be appreciated.

    1. It’s hard to say. There are a number of things that COULD help you, but you need a system to personalize these treatments to you so that you can fix your gut. This is why I spent 3 years writing Healthy Gut, Healthy You. Check it out 🙂

    2. Hi Crystal,
Your symptoms and exact weight/height are almost exactly like mine. I am now suspecting I’ve had a parasitic infection for years.

I’m working now on a program from Global Healing which was great, but I wondered what your program was?
Also…doing diet modification and light exercise (too tired for the previous, more strenuous routines). Thanks for your sharing.

  16. Someone is telling me that my ferrets might have internal parasites. I don’t have any other information on that situation just yet, but, on several occasions while living with them in a certain house, I experienced gastrointestinal issues including bloating and pooping blood (I imagined from ulcers) and feeling really ill to my stomach and having to eat like constantly (which I still feel) or I get sick, among other things.

I was just wondering if I could eat some food grade diatamaceous earth and take care of this if it is a parasite for myself? My ferrets are going to be getting better treatment than myself but I don’t really have insurance and I was just wondering if this was something quick I could do without all this testing and uncertainty in the meantime of not knowing exactly what is wrong with them (they are being cared for right now at a separate facility)?

    1. Because now it’s gotten to where I need to eat constantly or I get sick but also just the thought of a lot of foods makes me feel kind of ill. I just don’t feel great.

      1. Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear you’re not feeling well. I would definitely suggest making an appointment with a doctor ASAP – this doesn’t sound like something you want to guess about. In addition, you can also pick up a copy of Dr Ruscio’s book, “Healthy Gut, Healthy You”, where he outlines the exact protocol he uses in his clinic to help patients overcome gut issues. You can find it here: https://www.drruscio.com/getgutbook

        Good luck!

  18. Hi Doc,
I recently had a bowel movement with what look like segments of a tape worm.shortly after I saw that I eliminated a rubber substance and that freaked me out bad. I too have been having bad stomach issues and it has been impossible for me to drop weight for several years now. Even hired a trainer and worked out hard and religiously 5-7 days a week for about 10 months. Im always sick, bloated and pregnant looking. Any advice you can give would be amazing!!

    1. Hi Sheila,

I’m sorry you’ve been struggling with this. I would recommend picking up a copy of Dr Ruscio’s book, “Healthy Gut, Healthy You”, as it walks through the exact protocol Dr Ruscio uses in his clinic to help patients overcome frustrating digestive issues. You can find it here: https://www.drruscio.com/getgutbook If you think you need something more personalized, you can always contact the clinic to become a patient (he sees people remotely if you don’t live in CA). 20. Hi there! I found out about a month ago I have Lymes disease, parasite, Candida overgrowth, and roundworms. I am trying to find a more natural approach to heal. I have seen two functional medicine doctors who have over supplemented and now I am looking at different avenues. Hi there! 21. Hi… I’ve been sick for a year with weight gain, insomnia, extreme hunger, and allergy- like symptoms. I’ve tested positive for endolimax and blastocysts, and am being treated with tinidazole and praziquantel but neither is working. I’m getting burnt out on this battle. What else can I do?

  23. Omg I would love to talk with you! For the past 2 years I have experienced the bloating, constipation, fatigue, then I began getting an irritating rash around my eyes that would come and go and in addition to that, I began itching intensly on my legs (calves) one evening about a year ago and have since been having major skin irritations on my arms and legs. I have seen 5 doctors during this time. I was treated for scabies by my family Dr (wasn’t that) then 3 different doctors, 1 er dr, 1 general physician, and 1 dermotologist who all told me it was an allergic reaction and prescribed antihistamine pills and creme as well as antibiotics which helped with itching but that was it. I also saw another urgent care physician who gave me a steroid shot and sent me on my way. I asked all but 1 Dr to please test my skin I felt as tho I am being eaten alive as there would be lesions and hi was on rashes on my skin when I woke up in the morning that we’re not there the previous day. I never got a skin test. At this point I have lost all faith and hope in both the medical professionals as well as ever living a normal life. I live in Texas and haven worn shorts or a short sleeved shirt in 2 years and I’m drowning in depression. I came across a Blog on coffee enemas and I thought to myself why not try this and I did and what I saw as a result of doing this, not only freaked me out, it made me few If for my life. Yet I felt like a weight had been lifted as I finally had answers sadly, I had to seek out and find on my own.I learned I was being eaten alive from the inside out. That my suspicion was correct but I had no idea it was to this extent. Hesitant to schedule an appointment due to the lack of help from the several doctors I turned to, i called anyway and was put on a 10 day supply of albendozol tablets 2- 200mg 2×qd. my skin is visibly, already improving and I’m only on day 2 but feel as tho there has to be more I can do to improve my health.
Any advice or suggestions? Thank you so much!

  24. Hello,
I came across your YouTube interview about pork tapeworms. The signs and symptoms you mentioned sound like mine. Could you please describe what pork tapeworms looks like in the stool when there is a die off? I suspect I may have them. I’ve been told I’m suffering from many parasites, actually.
My name is Sarit. I live in London. I just turned 50. I’ve been in good health, generally. After giving birth 19 years ago, I was diagnosed with under active thyroid – now I’m on 50 mg thyroxine. About 10 years ago, I started to not feel myself: insomnia, brain fog, no energy a week before and during my period. I used to go to Austria once a year to the Mayr clinic. It helped as I would eat less and give my intestine a break. Approximately 2 years ago I had a sinus operation and was medicated with cortisone tablets that really upset my stomach. Ever since I had pain similar to ulcer. I had every test including colonoscopy and endoscopy. My doctor prescribed ameprozole.
I didn’t want to be on this medication forever so I tried acupuncture & cranial osteopath treatments which made me better for a short time. I was referred to a cellular nutritional therapist and in September of 2018, I started my first treatment in a program that uses a Bioresonance machine. The therapist diagnosed me with chronic fatigue, leaky gut and multiple parasites. The therapist prescribed a protocol of diet and supplements. She put me on a strict cleanse which I’ve been on ever since. I haven’t eaten gluten, sugar or dairy since. My diet is rather pescatarian, essentially made up of fresh vegetables, very little fruit and minimal protein – no red meat at all. I’m taking lots of vitamins and supplements – including P5P, Omega 3, Neem, Krill oil, probiotics in a variety of preparations (tincture, powder, tablet, etc). I also drink herbal teas to heal the gut, anti-parasites and anti-fungal formulas. Initially, as I started treatment my sinus issues came back big time. In November, my sinuses cleared and I noticed that I suffered from fewer tummy aches. My acid reflux decreased as well. I had more energy. As time progressed, the therapist added more and more supplements. I would experience die off and then improvement in a continuous cycle. I feel a bit better than when I started with the therapist. However, I now get pressure pains under the diaphragm, pain in the chest on the right hand side and shortness of breath. At my most recent appointment, 3 weeks ago, the Bioresonance machine indicated that I’m still releasing parasites – nearly a full year after commencing the cleanse. My therapist has explained that I’m harbouring multiple types of parasites that may have been in my body for years, perhaps even from childhood. Growing up in Israel in the 70s I may have been exposed to tainted water, cats & dogs , and other elements that introduced parasites to my system. My therapist says she has no idea for sure, but feels that I’m still teeming with them. She gave me more herbal tinctures and powder which caused extreme bloating & weight gain and made me terribly sick. So sick that last week I took it upon myself to stop the neem, the fungus tincture and the powder. Instead, I drink fresh bitter melon – karela juice, daily. Within a week I lost most of the water retention. I still see dead parasites in my stool – they look like thin yellow hay . I’m desperate to find a therapist in the UK to get a second opinion. I want to know what kind of parasites I still have and to find the correct treatment that won’t make me sick for so long. It’s been nearly a year. My therapist tells me it can take another 2 or 3 years for some people. I respect the journey but I want my life back, to be able to be active, to exercise daily and to socialise. This process has been debilitating in so many ways.
Is there any way you or someone you recommend could help me?
    Thanks so much.
    Sarit

    1. Hi Sarit,

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been dealing with this for so long, I know how frustrating it can get. Pork tape worms are long, thin, and flat, sort of like a small ribbon, so keep an eye out for something that looks like it could be that. Google image search could be helpful. Dr Ruscio sees patients virtually, so if you’d like to apply to become a patient, you can do so here: https://www.drruscio.com/gethelp as he specializes in gut health.

      Good luck!

  25. Some of these things I Find that I have like feeling Extreme hunger after eating Carbs, but that could just be the fact that maybe I dont have the digestive enzyme which breaks down Carbs! I have trouble falling asleep and STRESS accompanies me everywhere, which makes my epilepsy act up! I also have a problem with my skin which is that If I eat something hot, my cheeks will turn red! Losing weight is hard for me! When I read this Article I started wondering if I have Parasites too!

    1. Hi Anna,

I’m sorry you’re dealing with so much. You may want to consider asking your doctor for a GI panel. Good luck!
