Candida Biofilm Treatment for Weight Loss

This is a patient conversation from a few years ago but I thought it was worth sharing. It illustrates the importance of treating biofilms in stubborn cases of candida.  It also illustrates how fairly remarkable weight loss can be achieved by improving your gut health.

Case Study: Candida and Weight Loss

Dr. Michael Ruscio: Hi, this is Dr. Ruscio, and I’m here with Jen. She recently had some good results in the clinic. She had a really kind of a unique case that we don’t see a lot of, but it’s a really interesting concept. Jen had a candida overgrowth in the intestines, but she had one that was protected by a biofilm. So we tested for it, we treated it, and it just wouldn’t go away. This candida wouldn’t go away until we used some biofilm-degrading agents. Today was kind of our check-in, and I was hoping to hear her say she was doing great when she came in and she was. We finally have been able to eradicate this candida, so I just wanted to let Jen kind of give you her perspective on this whole thing.

Jen: I’m someone who had always been healthy and fit, not necessarily trim and slender, but I had a pretty healthy, fit physique, I thought. I also had, I thought, a good diet—a lot of “healthy whole grains” and not a lot of red meat—and yet a couple of years ago I started putting on weight like crazy, and I could not lose an ounce, even after discovering paleo, even after going gluten free. I literally could not lose an ounce, and I was gaining almost every week. So I knew something was wrong, and I even tried intermittent fasting. I got down to the point where I was just eating dinner, and I still could not lose weight at all.

I first tried traditional medicine, just went to a regular internist, and that wasn’t terribly helpful. And through reading a lot of books and listening to a lot of podcasts, I came across the idea of trying a functional medicine practitioner. We started with a lot of blood tests, intestinal tests, and eventually led to the idea that candida overgrowth as well as intestinal fungus. So we started a regimen of a variety of supplements and probiotics, and I’m happy to say that I’ve had just a huge almost… I mean, not in the beginning. It took a little while to get things going, but now it’s going like gangbusters, even within this last month. I’ve lost weight like crazy, sleeping super well. Yeah, I’m very happy with the results.

DR: Awesome. Well, that just goes to show you guys that if you’re frustrated with something and you can’t figure out what the cause is, you can feel a lot better. Jen is a shining example of that. Congratulations, Jen, that you’re doing so well.

J: Thank you.

DR: There you go!

  1. I have a similar problem with candida and have been battling it for over a year. Just when I think I’ve beaten it, it comes back. It has caused a lot of inflammation, which makes for a very strict diet to follow.

Just like Jen, I have had some weight gain that has not been “earned” and won’t go away. My diet couldn’t get any cleaner at this point, but still, I’m walking around with a gut like Homer Simpson… (not that there’s anything wrong with that… except maybe that it doesn’t look as nice on a female… ) I’m 46, very fit and WAS, up until last week, doing cardio and strength training six days per week. After listening to your interview with the MindPump guys, I learned that I’m one of “those” girls and all this training is actually to my disadvantage, so I’ve designed and started a new program to “dial it back” so to speak.

I’ve just learned about biofilm, and thanks to reading some of your articles, have just ordered InterFase®️ Plus –
Antibiofilm enzyme combination. (thank you for sharing this) I’m already taking some probiotics, and because I don’t really know what I’m doing, I’m trying some from each of the four different classes that you’ve explained. (This is hard when you’re just a regular person… I’m really looking forward to the publishing of the Gut Book.)

Lately, I’ve been doing intermittent fasting and am researching the low FODMAP diet, and while I know the fasting will help, I’m not sure if the low FODMAP diet is going to be ok if I’m still trying to starve the candida. At this point, everything I eat seems to hurt or make me sick, so I don’t have anything to lose. I’m going to give it a try.

Do you have any advice that would help? Have you SEEN Homer Simpson?

Thanks in advance, and thanks for all that you do.

    1. Hey Tracy,
Lets see if we can rid you of the Home Simpson gut. The best place to start would be with my book. There is far more there than I could hope to compete with in a comment here. It will be on pre-order in Jan!
