How to Support Your Adrenals to Help Heal Your Gut

Adrenal fatigue is a common term in the natural medicine world, but it’s not typically acknowledged by conventional doctors. The medical term for adrenal fatigue is HPA dysfunction, and it’s almost always caused by some type of chronic stress. HPA axis stands for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. It’s important to point out that adrenal fatigue is not an actual problem with the adrenal glands. It’s more of a brain communication problem. The brain and adrenals communicate with each other to help keep cortisol and DHEA production in normal levels. When this communication suffers, then cortisol and DHEA will be out of balance—either too high or too low.

When hormone levels are out of range, it can cause a wide range of symptoms and negatively impact gut health and immune health. It’s important that when you’re trying to heal your gut, you’re also supporting your adrenals. There are several ways to support adrenal health—lifestyle (stress management), quality sleep, diet, and supplementation.

Today, we’ll speak specifically to different supplements that help with adrenal health. Please remember that supplements aren’t a magic pill. It’s important to manage your stress, get quality sleep, and eat a clean diet in addition to incorporating supplements.

Here are a few different supplements that can help support your adrenals as you’re trying to heal your gut.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is directly related to cortisol output and is found in high concentation in the adrenal glands. Suppplementing with vitamin C can help support adrenal function and healthy cortisol levels.

Pantothenic Acid

Also known as vitamin B5, pathothenic acid plays a role in creating every hormone in the body, including cortisol and DHEA. B5 is very supportive for adrenal health and helps with anxiety, stress, and cortisol production.

Adaptogenic Herbs

Certain herbs, such as ginseng, rhodiola, ashwanga, and cordyceps are know to support adrenal function. They are a nice option in that they adapt to your body’s specific needs.

Adrenal Gladulars

Glandulars refer to raw animal tissue extracts typically derived from bovine or porcine tissue. These extracts contain all of the nutritional fundamentals, cofactors, and hormones present in the organ. These extracts are used to replenish and eventually normalize adrenal function. These supplements should be discontinued once they’ve done their job repairing adrenal function and should not be used for extended periods of time.

  1. I have read in many articles that adaptogenic herbs can poorly affect those with thyroid conditions. Is this true and should I stay away from them due to my Hashimotos? What is your recommendation for those with both thyroid conditions and adrenal conditions?

    1. Hi Joy,

Dr Ruscio isn’t worried about this, and continues to recommend adaptogens.

      Hope this helps!
