In a study aimed to evaluate clinical symptoms in diarrhea predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) receiving berberine hydrochloride in a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial, berberine hydrochloride was well tolerated and reduced IBS-D symptoms, which effectively improved patients quality of life.

This systematic review and meta-analysis found no effect of selenium supplementation on thyroid stimulating hormone, health-related quality of life or thyroid ultrasound, in levothyroxine substitution-untreated individuals, and sporadic evaluation of clinically relevant outcomes in levothyroxine substitution-treated patients.

Future randomized controlled trials are needed to evaluate disease progression or health-related quality of life, before determining the relevance of selenium supplementation in autoimmune thyroiditis.

One study led to the hypothesis that there is a possible role of carbohydrate metabolism in the development and maintenance of autoimmune thyroiditis associated with body weight increase and slower metabolism.
