If you spend a lot of time on screens, this is a nutrient worth having on your radar, even if you don’t have a diagnosed eye condition yet.
The Gut Connection: How Your Body Absorbs and Uses Zeaxanthin
Here’s something most articles on zeaxanthin skip entirely, and it’s often the most useful part for someone who’s already dealing with a chronic health issue: None of zeaxanthin’s benefits matter if your gut isn’t absorbing it.
Zeaxanthin is fat-soluble. That means it needs to be packaged into tiny fat droplets called micelles before your small intestine can take it up, a process that depends on bile acids and pancreatic enzymes working properly 4. If your digestion is compromised, whether from low stomach acid, gallbladder issues, or a damaged gut lining, you can eat all the orange peppers and egg yolks in the world and still absorb a fraction of what you should.
There’s also a newer piece of the puzzle. A meaningful portion of the zeaxanthin you eat doesn’t get absorbed in the small intestine at all. It travels down to the colon, where it interacts directly with your gut bacteria 5. This research is still early, so I wouldn’t rely on zeaxanthin alone for liver or metabolic support, but it’s a reasonable piece of a broader whole-foods strategy.
An emerging area: Immune function. In 2025, researchers at the University of Chicago published a notable finding in the journal Cell Reports Medicine. In lab and mouse studies, zeaxanthin appeared to strengthen a specific type of immune cell called a CD8+ T cell, the cells responsible for directly killing abnormal or cancerous cells, and enhance the effectiveness of a common immunotherapy drug when combined 7. This is genuinely interesting science. It’s also entirely preclinical. - Winter squash and orange juice, in smaller but still meaningful amounts
A simple, practical goal: Aim to include at least one of these foods most days, paired with a source of fat. A salad with sliced orange pepper, goji berries, and an olive oil dressing, or scrambled eggs with a side of corn, does more for your zeaxanthin status than any single “superfood” ever will 4.
Zeaxanthin Supplements: Dosage, Safety, and Side Effects
